Resident
Curriculum
Throughout the academic year, our resident physicians cycle through clinical
scenarios highly pertinent to Emergency Medicine. Our simulator sessions
are carefully matched to resident training level. All cases utilize: 1)
case progressions, 2) critical actions, 3)
supporting documents such as EKG's, XRAYS, triage and EMS papers and 4)
detailed educational handouts discussing pathology and current evidence
based management principles of the disease entity. Residents leave
the session armed with hands on experience in managing complicated emergent
cases.
Student Curriculum
Using the simulator’s unique ability to accurately replicate normal
and pathologic physical findings and acute cardio-respiratory physiology,
we provide Downstate's 4th year medical students with an intensive training
course. The course reviews pertinent theoretical aspects of the critically
ill patient. It focuses on early identification of severe illness and
practical management skills relating to airway management, respiratory
distress and cardiopulmonary arrest. Upon completion of the course, students
possess basic knowledge and skills necessary to the initial stabilization
of critically ill patients.
Fellow
Curriculum
Cardiolgy fellows train annually in pericardiocentesis, and we are currently
developing a curriculum for transvenous pacemaker insertion.
